Support USGBC Mississippi Chapter

Beyond the efforts of our active volunteers, our work depends on contributions from individuals and organizations. Your support will help us achieve our mission to transform the built environment in Mississippi.

USGBC Mississippi is committed to the idea that by greening Mississippi communities, they will be transformed to support a strong economy and healthy environment for all who live, work and play in our beautiful state.

Your contribution will support numerous green building programs that deliver on our mission around Mississippi, including:

Education

The Chapter works to accelerate green building demand, delivery and accessibility through innovative education programs. Anything from targeted education for professionals in the green building industry, to educational sessions for the general audience, the Chapter is focusing heavily on providing quality education to expand the use of green building best practices.

Currently the Chapter offers education through regular seminars, specific workshops, and educational sessions at our annual Sustainability Conference.

Green Schools

Recent studies have shown that the academic performance of students in green schools improve as much as 20 percent over previous performance. The Chapter is working hard to ensure that every child in Mississippi attends a green schools within a generation. In the past year the Chapter have played a major role in the decision by a Mississippi School District to pursue
LEED certification for their new school and it is currently assisting an additional school with their green building pursuit. Looking ahead, we plan to expand our support role to other school districts in the State.

Green Communities

Green communities are great places to live, work and have fun. They comprise the buildings we live and work in, the infrastructure in our communities and more. The Chapter is actively promoting the use of LEED programs, which promote sustainable communities. We plan to partner with several organizations to deliver green building programs, including the Habitat for Humanity and
the AIA Mississippi Chapter. One of our goals is to support green, affordable homes in Mississippi through our partnership with Habitat for Humanity.

Advocacy

Critical to achieving the Chapter’s mission is our advocacy efforts. The objectives of the Advocacy Committee are:

Advocate a green public policy platform
Educate civic leaders to encourage the adoption of sustainable design as a necessary and viable development practice
Promote and support changes in regional and local zoning and planning boards and building codes
Promote and support responsible legislation that encourages green building planning, design, and construction practices

The Chapter is planning a Green Day at the Capitol to introduce legislators to the concepts and case studies of Mississippi projects that meet enhanced performance standards, and to let them know the critical importance of this to the State’s agricultural and tourism needs.

Global Outreach

The Chapter believes that even though its physical borders are defined by the state lines, our commitment to green buildings and more prosperous communities is borderless and it is shared by like-minded organizations all over the world.
Through a unique collaboration, the Chapter has reached beyond its borders and joined forces with its counterpart in Italy - the Lazio Chapter of the Green Building Council Italia, with its headquarters in Rome. One of the main goals for this “Chapter Sistership” is to establish channels of communications and to foster a dialogue that will ultimately promote educational and cultural exchanges, which support both Chapters’ missions.

The two chapters are planning a yearly Green Building Tour in each respective country. Find out more information about it here.
